Occupational health screening is designed to prevent and reduce work-related injuries. Individual assessments are usually conducted face-to-face. Employers request occupational health screenings to determine whether someone is physically suited to a particular role.  

Occupational health screening can serve several different purposes including: 

  • Establishing a candidate’s ability to meet the physical requirements of a new role. 
  • Where a job exposes an employee to health hazards (for instance they may have to work in a confined space), monitoring that person’s health at appropriate intervals.  
  • Establishing whether an employee is able to return to work after a prolonged absence. 
  • Where an employee or student has a health condition, understanding the conditions or adjustments required to support them at work.  
  • Determining the long-term implications of exposure to hazardous substances.

An organisation’s health and safety risk assessments will establish whether health screening is required for people in specific roles. This usually involves an appropriate risk assessment process.  

If you are asked to a health screening assessment, please be aware that: 

  • Health screening assessments can be virtual or face-to-face. Face-to-face assessments can be organised on site, as required, or can be at one of our clinics (depending on the contract we have with your employer). You will be asked to bring proof of identity, glasses (if worn), so you can complete paperwork, and a list of any current medications. When your assessment has been completed, we will explain what information will be sent to your manager, and when you need to attend your next health screening appointment (these are usually set up at appropriate intervals).

  • Following the assessment, it is the responsibility of your organisation (usually through your manager) to work with you to discuss and act on any recommendations we have made.
